Tuesday: October 20th: 360 Degree Leadership

Who do you lead up, down and across to? Which tenets of 360 degree leadership help you to do so?

  1. Within the golf team, I lead up with my coaches, I lead across with some of my teammates and I lead down with the lowerclassmen on the team.
This reading is based on the fact that we are not always in a formal leadership position or the highest in hierarchy within the organizations we are a part of. Knowing this, we have to find ways to lead in a positive way from any spot within them. Something that is considered key for leading across, up and down was “influence”. To be influential, leaders have to be congruent with who they are and the organizations values and goals, prepared, have good people skills and most importantly ADD VALUE to the people they are leading. Whether you are leading down, across or up if you are not adding value to the individuals, you will not be followed or influential.
Another thing I found really valuable from the reading was the leadership loop. I believe this loop (caring, learning, appreciating, contributing, verbalizing, leading, succeeding) should be applied to the three leaderships.
Applying the reading to my situation, I would say that when I lead across on my team I am good at thinking of new things to help my teammates play their best and competing while having good personal relationships, when I lead down I am good at pushing the lowerclassmen to the best they can be and helping them with the things they need and when I lead up I think I am good at being a representative of my teammates to my coaches but I could work on building better personal relationships with them and adding them value.
