EDUCATE, ENGAGE, EMPOWER. During my two years and 2 months as a student-athlete I have heard countless times "as UT athletes, you guys are always on the spotlight". This compliance cliché is extremely true. That is the first thing that came to my mind when I read this question. Even though compliance uses this phrase in a sense where they simply ask us not to break any rules because everybody will find out, I think we can angle servant leadership with it. As athletes, we have teams and we are public figures. The first people whom we can hold the torch for are the individuals on our teams. Showing support on personal issues, playing for the team instead of ourselves individually and holding each other accountable are simple ways we can do it. As public figures we can impact a high number of people by being earnest and humble. By doing this we will set a high bar outside the court, field, etc. and people will follow. In my opinion, it is through who we are outside competition that we can really give light to others and it is because we are athletes that we have access to lighting the way for the fan base. JCSG
